FARMSHARE PROGRAM RECEIVES DONATION FROM CREDIT UNION
Recently, your Credit Union donated $4,000 to the Sebasticook Valley Senior FarmShare Program, to support its effort to provide fresh produce to local seniors. This program, sponsored by the Credit Union and Sebasticook Family Doctors, awards mini-grants to local farms, who in turn provide seniors with $50 shares to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables through the summer and fall months. Last year, ten local farms participated in the program, providing needed assistance to 100 senior citizens in the area. A portion of the proceeds provided fresh produce to low-income families through contributions to the Pittsfield food pantry. SVFCU’s donation was part of Maine Credit Unions’ Campaign for Ending Hunger, which provides over $10,000 annually in support of food banks in the Sebasticook Valley. For more information about the FarmShare Program, contact Karen Hawkes at 487-3890.

“Egg Scramble” 5K a Success for Ending Hunger
July 24, 2010

This past Saturday, runners and walkers alike, came together in the early morning hours, at our Pittsfield location to run in SVFCU’s second 5K run/walk to benefit the several food pantries in the local area. Thanks to the support of the participants, as well as the many businesses that sponsored it, this event was a resounding success, raising over $1,300, all of which will go to support the food pantries in the Sebasticook Valley.
The day was drizzly and overcast, but that did not dampen the spirits of the 41 participants, ranging in ages between 16 and 58. In fact, the cool weather contributed to fast runs for many of the runners. The fastest overall male finisher was 16-year old Matt McClintock of Athens with a winning time of 17:02, and the fastest overall female finisher was Carrie Pike of Bangor with a winning time of 21:32.
Over the last six years, Sebasticook Valley Federal Credit Union has been able to contribute nearly $60,000 to help feed those in need. SVFCU is grateful to the participants and many sponsors that helped make this event successful. For more information, call 487-5576 or visit www.svfcume.com.
